HHaufel.JPGEducation in Vocational College
Future pharmaceutical-technical assistants
Bujumbura, Burundi
Status: active
In order to respond to the lack of skilled workers in the health-care system of Burundi, a vocational college is being built in the capital Bujumbura where pharmaceutical-technical assistants will be educated. After their training, they will be qualified to work in pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, hospital pharmacies and in laboratories for the research of remedies as well as in medical diagnostics.
There will be a chemical, a galenic, a microbiological and a medicine-diagnostic lab at the school’s disposal. In the building, there will also be a ward which is to improve the medical care in the school’s environment. A doctor will take over the management of the whole institute including the school and the ward. Two pharmacists and other experts will be available as native teachers. Besides, guest speakers will participate in the classes. Teaching will start in the autumn of 2008.

There are three children’s aid agencies involved in the project. The school is maintained by a local organisation, the Foundation Stamm (www.fondationstamm.bi). HUMAN HELP NETWORK (www.HHN.org), a children’s aid agency from Mainz, is building the school on the ground of an already existing education centre belonging to the Foundation Stamm. HHN receives development funding from the German ministry of economic cooperation and development for this project. The plan of the school building was realised by the architect Martina Wzionte, who is the founder of the children’s aid agency “burundikids” in Cologne (www.burundikids.org). This organisation also contributes to the financing of the project.

I drew up a general plan for the vocational training considering the local needs and conditions. In the meantime, the public authority permitted the running of the school based on this plan. The shell of the building will be completed in spring. I managed to procure adequate equipment for the laboratories mainly in the form of donations provided by pharmaceutical companies and pharmaceutical suppliers, and in some cases from the means of my work as a consultant. They are already safely wrapped in a container and dispatched. Chemicals, school furniture and instruments for the ventilation system will be sent off in two other containers. Finally, experts from Germany will come to install the ventilation system, to prepare the laboratories and to introduce everyone to deal with the complicated laboratory tools.
