Millions of small cotton farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face significant economic disadvantages compared to counterparts in the developed world. The main culprits are industrialized nations’ farming subsidies, which depress prices for cotton on the global market and make it virtually impossible for small African farmers to convert their favorable production conditions into a corresponding price advantage.
